Another dark twisted story by Eric LaRocca depicting family trauma and grief. While interesting with a grotesque premise and atmosphere this wasn’t my favorite by Eric LaRocca. I enjoyed the themes and dark imagery but overall found the story to be missing some of the eerie scenes and unpredictably that the author is known for.
“Just like chrysanthemums planted in dry soil, or a neglected cactus, I often wonder if my memories would shrivel and crisp until black like delicate wreaths of ivy abandoned in daylight. I wonder if after a prolonged absence they might wither and close like poppies at sunset”
I’m a huge Eric LaRocca fan, however, this one wasn’t my favorite. Even so, the story had an impact on me. It uses a lot of symbolism and bizarre descriptions to describe the trauma of the young teen in the story.
I related strongly with the strained relationship of mother and daughter. It also portrayed how mothers aren’t always a nurturing presence and can even go as far as to be jealous of their own child.

Definitely an interesting novella. I am not 100% what happened or where this was set but the imagery and writing were well done. I am not sure I would read it again but may try it on audio at some point to see how it is to experience it that way. I definitely want to read more of this imaginative author though.
