I'm honestly just very confused. I don't really know what I just read but I don't feel strongly about it at all. It was kinda gross but that's about the extent of it. I get that it's supposed to illustrate grief, abandonment and maltreatment of Mara but all of the explorations of it felt very surface-level. I still want to read "THINGS HAVE GOTTEN WORSE SINCE WE LAST SPOKE" but this one was really disappointing. It felt like the intention was to shock (kind of?) and unsettle the reader but I unfortunately don't think that was enough to keep the book afloat and was mostly just befuddled and kind of lost for most of it. The cover is gorgeous but this one reminded me that I really need to stop being enticed by books solely because they're visually stunning. The writing was also pretentious in a way that I found heavy-handed and unnecessary and somehow dragged a less than 100 page book.

I’m not too sure what to rate this one. Eric’s covers are always beautiful and I know it’s gonna be dark and gross before I read. This is my third book by him. He deff knows how to make you confused and uncomfortable. This is also a very short read coming in at right under 100 pages.

This story is about a young girl named Mara and her pregnant mother. The landscape where they are seems to be an apocalyptic war zone. Mara’s father is gunned down trying to leave their apartment. After this, strange visitors keep coming to see them and never leave. This deff felt like a fairytale fever dream. It wasn’t as wtf as Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke but there were a few moments I cringed a bit. This story deals with grief and not being able to let go of what is hurting you.

I was getting some Mother! vibes at the end there. I’m not sure if I liked this one or not. Eric’s stories seem to be hit or miss for me. Gotta think a bit on what I really thought. I’m always willing to read all the books he puts out so I’m ready for whatever is next!

This story has a hold on me! Months later, I have to add in an actual review because I never stopped thinking about this book. It's gripping, confusing in the best possible way and it will live with me forever, dear heart.
