Eric LaRocca writes a world seen by the character Mara through a kaleidoscope made of shards of blood-stained glass, grief, and abuse. This is a dark magical realism tale...or is it? How does one face end times outside of a home that reverberates in endings within it, over and over?
LaRocca writes slinking, shadowy, stealthy prose that walks among nightmares.
"We Can Never Leave This Place" will stick with me for a long, long time, no doubt crawling into my thoughts from behind smoldering, broken walls in the dark.

Just when you thought nothing could gross you out anymore, you find Eric LaRocca. I don't even know what to say about this book, other than praise for its exceptional grim atmosphere and horrifying twisting of reality. Although I might have to also mention a CW spanning from... honestly what in this book isn't on the CW-list?

The stuff of a fever induced nightmare. But I could have used a smidge more backstory to build up the characters.

This is my third book from Eric LaRocca and I'm starting to realize maybe he's just not for me. The gruesome writing is excellent but the story didn't make much sense. I feel like there's a much better book hidden in the pages of this one. It went a weird surreal direction when all the ingredients were there for a more realistic horror. Oh well.

I do wonder if I would have enjoyed this more if I read it at a different time. It is objectively interesting and well-written, but it just didn’t connect with me the same way LaRocca’s other work has - despite exploring similar concepts. I guess the difference here is the way those concepts are explored? It is definitely a venture into a more fantastical side of horror which isn’t necessarily my thing.

I cant quite pin point how I feel about this book. It was weird and not what I was expecting but also weird in a way that made me double and triple check I didn't miss details. The concept was interesting but the sentient animal creatures was bizarre. However it also kept me hooked. It was a weird time with this book but definitely not something I regret reading.

If you like intentionally weird horror than this book is for you.
