Unfortunately didn’t land for me. The writing style never captured me and felt a bit all over the place. Characters felt flat, the point felt obvious but belabored. The language and descriptions didn’t really add to the story or give character perspective (at least until a reveal at the end) that still didn’t give enough premise to really set the horror of anything. And maybe personally, severing an arm, eating guts, lots (lots) of throw up does not really do enough to set the tone for me.

i...???
I loved "things have gotten worse since we last spoke" and hated "you've lost a lot of blood" so this was a tie breaker for me nd unfortunately I don't think I'll be picking up anymore of their work.
while I didn't hate this while reading it, I did not have a fucking clue what was going on at any point. any of the parts that should have been freaky or gross or horrifying had little to no effect on me because I couldn't decipher the purpose enough to feel tension or intense emotion beyond utter confusion.

"We can never leave this place" is the first work of fiction by Eric LaRocca that I read and I can honestly say that I have never read a better horror story that really deserves to be considered true horror. It offers creepy, gross and nail-biting horror made for nightmares, but at the same time it is also heartbreaking to accompany the 15 year old girl Mara on her nightmarish and traumatic journey within the walls of her home. For me "We can never leave this place" is also literary fiction of the highest quality because it offers the reader so much room for interpretation. It will be fun to read it again after a while and discover new hidden meanings. Great horror, great literature, enjoy!

This book is extremely disturbing. I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down, but it was morbid curiosity. The prose and style are wonderful and the book succeeds in getting the point across. It was not an enjoyable experience. You really want to check the content warnings for this one
