Oof...
I decided on a whim to pick this short read and read it on the way to my husband's family church this morning....
I guess I woke up and chose violence.
This is another heavy hitter from Eric LaRocca, deep diving into grief, family neglect, and violence, and the long escapes your mind makes to cover up for abuse.
Mara is a 15yo storyteller who is surviving in what seems to be a war stricken area, and after the loss of her father, she and her mother mourn their loss when visitors come in and now need to be fed and entertained.
The entire time I was reading this, I was (°○°) in the passenger seat, went into the church service, and was still thinking of what i was reading, then immediately continued it. That plot twists at the end. I'm still in shock they were able to include so much into less than 100 pages.
Where I can see why some people might not like this, for me, it was a win, the way they write and portray grief and the depravity of humanity is just addictive.
