I was excited to read this book and in the end, did not understand the hype. It moved so slowly…and didn’t really go anywhere at all. There was some good insight here and there, but I felt like I was talking to an elderly person in a bar who was telling me a rambling story about lots of different characters and never really got to the point. Each chapter was a quick window into a different character’s life and morality and they sort of tied together in the end, but I wanted more plot and less rambling.

Wow! Overall, I enjoyed this very much. Very profound and very sad story. There were a few parts that were slow/hard to follow, you really have to pay attention to every word in order to know what’s going on. The way everything wrapped up at the end was great.

Ugh. I wanted to like this so bad but it was simply too slow. By the time I got to the end, I had forgotten the whole bit in the beginning about the body and I ultimately didn’t feel super moved by the premise. (This could very well be my own fault! hold ran out and I had to return and pick back up) I feel as though there is a better and shorter way to articulate this novel than in the way it’s composed, and I wish so much that I liked it more cause many of the characters were wonderful- we just didn’t spend the time with them to care.
This book wasn't for me. I grew frustrated at the extensive background required at the start of each chapter. In fact, I would characterize the first 60% of the book as pure backstory to the events of the last act. By the time the plot got going, it was already over. I won't deny that McBride's prose is truly beautiful, which is what kept me reading.
