Not my favourite discworld novel maybe because it didn’t have the same essence of discworld that the others have. This focuses on the Wizards having to play a football match but that’s not really the main plot of the story it’s really about an Orc. It definitely had some funny parts but it just didn’t hit the same as usual

I've only read the first 3 books of the Discworld series so diving into #37 maybe wasn't the best idea. I had no clue what was going on with Ridcully and the former Dean, and Vetinari, but as I understand it, Mister Nutt, Trevor, Glenda, and Juliet were all brand new characters so I had no trouble following their story. And it was a rather enjoyable story. I also liked all the scenes where the wizards congregated. But a lot of the stuff with Vetinari flew over my head and I ended up skimming those parts. So, the football story was good, but I really had no clue about anything else.

To be honest beginning was not my cup of tea, but then it picked up and was pretty good. And it really was (not) about football.

Standard Pratchett, I'd say. For good or bad. Maybe a lot of whether I love/like Pratchett depends upon the idea of the book. His idea in this is football. He's British. If he were American, he'd have said soccer. I'm not a sports fan, by any stretch of the imagination. So, that's probably why this book didn't wow me.

I suspect that I’m going to be higher on this book than most, given that it has a slightly less than 4 star average on here, but for me it’s just about 4.5 stars. As a huge football (soccer to us Americans) fan, the plot of this book was fantastic. The wizards (with a distinct lack of Rincewind, whose role was relegated to that of a cameo) had to try and play a game of soccer in Ankh-Morpork, which was previously a mix of soccer and rugby. But at the request of Vetinari, the mysterious Mr. Nutt comes along and turns it into the beautiful game, with tactics and formations (proper 4-4-2 for the time period) and it catches on in a big way.

There’s also a few really interesting subplots in this book. There’s Mr. Nutt coming to terms with who he is, Trev growing into a man, Juliet becoming to the most sought after model in the world, and Glenda’s just whole deal of trying to look out for everyone. There’s also a lot of great bits with the wizards, especially Ridcully and Stibbons. The diminished use of Rincewind definitely helped, but I thought the other wizards were great on their own.

This was definitely the best book in the wizards/Rincewind storyline, even though the ending was a bit lacking in some areas. Personally, I really enjoyed this one, and it would fall in the top half among Discworld books for me.

Regrettably this is the discworld book that I was dreading to read because of the football topic. Surprisingly it was one of the best I've read and I almost felt like chanting "Likely! Likely! Likely!" with the crowd. There are so many interesting characters and events in this novel, it's a shame to judge it by it's cover.
