Historical fiction is not my favorite but I really enjoyed this book, and very cool to get insight on manhattans elite at the time. Sad to know how its going to end the whole time

Really wanted to like this one - did appreciate the writing itself and liked the concept, but wish we could have gotten a totally different perspective on this story so rating 2.5 or 3 stars. Found this book very boring and hard to stick with, surprised we didn't even get to the Titanic until ~80%, and overall would have loved to read this story way more if the focus were shifted to more post-Titanic and how our main character carried on after. Read half and then switched to audio to get through it in time for my book club - main perk there was, easy one to listen to at 1.5x speed :)

For me this book was so boring, even the titanic part. My book club chose this so I kept with it. It just isnt my cup of tea. It’s not poorly written, I think her style is fine, I just don’t care about high society and reading about their “horrible, miserable”, privileged lives. Now give me a third class passenger and I’d be more interested.

Also there was no plot because why would there be? If I had to choose another high society person to read about it would be Margaret Molly Brown. I enjoyed her character because she was low born.

I was upset about the dog dying.

What a hauntingly beautiful book and love story. I’ve never seen the movie Titanic, so this is my first real brush with anything related to the ship. And man was it heartbreaking! You obviously knew the end of the story, but getting there still tears your heart out! Especially since Abé talks about the dog too.

I found the fact that part of the chapters were Madeleine writing a letter to her son, and the other part written as a story about Madeleine a little back and forth while reading. I’m not sure if this is because I read on my kindle and the physical book makes it more clear of the difference or what. But I perspective changed randomly and that wasn’t my favorite as far as writing style. Overall though this book was amazing and really did grip your heart and throw it into the sea.

Thank you NetGalley for letting me read the ARC ebook.

I was entertained enough to finish the book and it was a quick read, ok if you just need something to read.
I think the author may have been trying to keep to the facts as much as possible / a little too much. While the real people's lives may have seemed dramatic, they were really low key for book character standards. I'm all, not much happens and there is no suspense. The book opens from the perspective of Mrs Astor writing to her baby so they tell you how the story will end right off the bat... Sometimes this works in novels but in this case it didn't.

Also, although I was looking for a light hearted read, it is hard to look past the glaring social issues of that time. Im not saying the author did wrong but personally may seek hist fiction books with more social commentary in the future.

It left me wanting so much more than it delivered.

I was expecting this book to be more of an origin story, with more emphasis on who Madeleine became after she was widowed. Her conversations with Margaret Brown seem to lay the groundwork for this. And yet, the book ends and it feels like you've just finished several hundred pages of prologue. It feels like a huge missed opportunity.

I loved the history. The writing was good. The pace of the story was a little slow for my taste though.
