I kept seeing this book and kept thinking it wasn’t for me but then a trusted friend made me change my mind. This story is fascinating - though it isn’t a memoir and I assume much liberty was taken with Madeline’s feelings along the way. While the 29 year age gap is shocking now, I thought that for the time it wasn’t but I think given the amount of media coverage of it maybe that’s incorrect. I can’t imagine myself in her shoes and only wish the story had continued on a little further into her next steps.

This book felt to me like the prelude for the story that had to actually be told. I had hoped it would be about the title character after she was widowed, but instead it was mostly a plod toward her husband’s watery death.
