as someone who’s always been unhealthily obsessed with the titanic, this novel drew me in from the first page.
although the tragedy isn’t front and centre, you can’t help but know that the quietly sincere love story at the heart of this novel does not have a happy ending.
and this is a love story. trust me, i didn’t care at first but somehow the writing drew me in and made me root for madeline and jack despite what i knew of the inevitable conclusion.
also really loved the descriptions of the clothes, places and settings; they were deliciously lush and magnificently opulent. i could picture it all so easily and it added a layer of immersion to this glamorous world.

Honestly, The Second Mrs. Astor was just not my cup of tea. When I read romance novels, I typically like there to be more than just the romance. If that's your thing, then you may enjoy this book. For me, however, I barely finished it. The entire book just felt like it was lacking any personality. The bulk of the story was before the Titanic sinking. It revolved around attending parties and social functions and didn't seem very interesting.
