Enjoyed the anime better but the manga actually made more sense, can understand why it is so influential. Pacing was very fast but also I read the entire thing in under 2 hours so maybe it's my own fault.

The time travel arc dropped my rating.

5/5 im already biased towards this story. art is excellent, the details that are specific to the manga only make the story even better (imo), just. ugh. love.

aesthetic only thing that can carry but suprised the source material was just as bad as the adaptation, 2d characters, shit pacing, and timeskips.

One of those works that was huge and influential at its time, but in my opinion hasn't held up spectacularly; honestly, the Crybaby anime adaptation really distills the good elements down to their essence, and removes or improves the things that haven't aged well. For example Miki's kind of a jerk in this comic, manipulating degrading, and bullying both Akira and her little brother, while the anime made her a kind, lovable person, so we actually want to see her protected. I also think the anime made the right choice combining Sirene and Nike, having Sirene also be Amon's former lover; it makes the Sirene chapter more compelling, and the Nike chapter is--probably not a hot take--stupid.

That's another thing, those ridiculous time-travel chapters. I assume they were originally published as some kind of extra or side story, since they're all quite short, do not fit into the main narrative, and include fourth wall breaks, but I do not understand why they exist or how they contribute to the greater story.

Obviously Devilman a seminal work, and if you're really into retro manga, especially horror, you'll probably want to check it out! But this is a rare case where I'd say most people should just stick with the anime remake.
