Did not finish. Was not very engaging for me.

This book was a great start to the series and starts off well. The story follows young Laurena as she starts to discover her magical abilities with the help of an elderly wizard. The characters are all quite interesting, and the story moves at a fast pace with adventure in every corner.

I struggled with this story. The prologue was good, intense, and caught my attention. However, when it switched to the life of a 13-year-old girl, I had a hard time continuing. I thought the girl was a lot younger based on her behavior. I had to go back to the beginning to remember her age. There was a lot of back and forth with the flashbacks that it confused me on more than one occasion.

Overall, the plot idea was a good one, definitely YA. But the delivery needs a bit more work.
