Maybe I will finally learn my lesson to not read a book just because you have withdrawals from another??
Rules of Our Own is a spicy, why choose, hockey romance (sound familiar?) following Mia Brooks, a doctor (I think?) who is invited to her best friends wedding and reunited with Alex and River, former lovers and NHL stars, and forced to share a room for the wedding weekend. As you can imagine, their romance blossoms from there.
I struggled through this book - all 500 and something pages of it. Mia was annoying. She was unprofessional, whiney, and had no depth or emotion to her character that went beyond “I need money for my charity” and “fuck me please”. Don’t even get me started on Alex and River. I am usually a sucker for horny, hockey boys but these two pissed me off. River tried too hard to be mysterious and quiet and Alex just missed the mark every time he opened his mouth.
This book is cringey as fuck. I think half the notes I made on my Kindle were about how cringey this book came off. There were so many moments that made me question the author and what she was trying to convey. Also, let’s ban the nickname ‘kitten’… please.
All of the plot developments were rushed and anti-climatic. It felt like the moment a new plot point or conflict was starting to be introduced, it was happening on the next page with little to no insight on the character, how it impacted them, them talking through their experience.
Don’t even get me started on the spicy scenes. They were fine, but the lack of chemistry between the characters outside of the bedroom leaked into the bedroom scenes and I couldn’t connect to them or feel empathy or excitement for them. Even when Alex started to open himself to his sexuality, I wasn’t excited for him because I didn’t care for him, his character, or his relationship with River. There was no build up to them either. I love when there is this tension leading up to it and there was nothing.
The ending sucked ass. They ripped off the ice bucket challenge, she was but wasn’t a doctor and that pissed me off, too many storylines happening at one time with none of them being particularly impactful, and too many underdeveloped characters. Alex and River needed to shut up and stop bombarding her friends every time she didn’t reply for 10 minutes and Mia needed to stop being so unprofessional in moments that mattered.
This pissed me off. Don’t read it. Even if you are missing Pucking Around.
