Little bit of swearing makes this more YA than MG.

Intrigue and terrible haircuts! This is action packed with solid world building and I'm excited to see where they go with it.

This joins my collection of webcomics-I-read-that-I-enjoyed-more-in-book-form. Mostly because her update schedule can be a bit erratic, and it's nice to sit down and read all the way through.

There are so many things to like about Witchy. A diverse cast of characters who are, more importantly to me, *drawn in a diverse way.* People have noses! Their faces are actually different shapes! Many different cultures drawn upon and represented! It's awesome and weird that it's something to be excited about!

Things to appreciate about Witchy:
+ Gorgeous art style & colors
+ Compelling world building and magic system
+ A cast of exclusively people of color
+ Diversity illustrated by style, not just skin color
+ Nyneve's mom. Enough said.
+ Such subtle ways that conventional western beauty standards are turned on their heads
+ An interesting, character-driven narrative
+ Trans rep, and it's done well

At first the pacing is a bit hard to get used to. Many graphic novels rush through the story. Witchy actually recovers its pacing quickly and then maintains the quality throughout. I can't wait for more and am so glad to be able to read it in book form. Would highly recommend this for a library or bookstore as a solid middle grade or young adult graphic novel to have around.

Long hair equals more power. So what happens when you cut it off?

This was generally a fast and easy read, which I really appreciated! This book got me out of my month long book slump with its interesting plot, characters and beautiful art. I really loved the magic system in this world and found it extremely interesting played out in the characters and how it makes people view them. The art style was just stunning and perfect for a story like this!
I am very much excited for the next installment and where it takes us.

Witchy is not a graphic novel I would have chosen for myself, simply because of the art style (I’m picky like that). However, it was included in an Owlcrate box, and I felt that I should at least give it a read, because why not.

I’m glad I did.

Witchy has a magic system that I had never seen before. That was enough to hook me. I discovered that I could overlook my dislike of the art style because of the story, which was intriguing. I will admit that none of the characters “hooked” me, but the story kept moving enough that it wasn’t a problem.

One thing that really surprised me was my interest in Nyneve. She didn’t strike me as a strong character, but she was able to carry the story well. Also, she must have one heck of a steady hand to be able to do what she did about half way through the story.

I also liked her relationship with Banana. I could see that something of a partnership was forming by the end, which was nice to see.

I do caution readers with one detail however. This is book one, though it is only stated as such on the binding (at least on the Owlcrate copy). I didn’t know that going in, otherwise I would have forgone there novel and simply read the webcomic online. I wasn’t expecting it to just... end with the story continuing on. But that’s more of a printing/publisher issue than anything.

I hope people go into this with a bit of an open mind, because I think it’s worth the read.

setting the story

This story seems like a lot of backstory before we get to the real adventure of Nyneve. It was very interesting to read and I enjoyed learning about this new world. I liked the color choices and art style of the book.
