Not my favorite art style, but I loved the use of color and I think this sets up a very interesting story.

I would recommend this book to fans of The Amulet series, sarting with [b:The Stonekeeper|1238684|The Stonekeeper (Amulet, #1)|Kazu Kibuishi|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327866356l/1238684._SX50_.jpg|1384641], and Avatar: The Last Airbender with the caveat that only time will tell if it is as thought-provoking and well-executed. Witchy does a lot of things well, such as including diverse characters (racially, body type, family structure), though the inclusion of pseudo-indigenous culture makes me twitch a little bit, especially because, as per usual, the main character is white (-passing) and blonde. It will also be interesting to see how the premise of magic being proportional to one's hair length will work out. Many cultures believe that there is power in long hair, but there is a lot to weave and braid (pun intended) due to the way that hair plays a huge role in gender expression and all the complexities of politics and identity that go with it.

Vivid storytelling and an expressive, whimsical artstyle combine with emotionally charged characters and a rich, vibrantly cultural world make for a fantastic graphic novel. Witchy was exciting and soul crushing in all the best ways and I'm super excited for the sequel.

The visual comedy in Ries's artstyle makes for great beats of humour which don't detract from the emotional plot and serve to strengthen the characterisations of those involved. Everyone was very human (except Banana, who felt very much like a raven (and was delightful)) and I quite enjoyed the flaws and skills everyone was equipped with, especially when those attributes conflicted.

I would have given Witchy five stars if not for my one tiny criticism (not really a spoiler since it's talked about in the blurb but read on at your own risk); I didn't understand what made someone's hair long enough for conscription but not too long for a witch burning? The book shows us characters who were 'burnt' in accordance with the blurb's explanation and some of them had shorter hair than members of the guard. I'm also a bit confused about the mechanics of hair growth in this world (does it just keep growing and growing? Do certain people have a limit to how long they can grow their hair? Is it biological? etc.)
These questions were not fully answered, but despite them, the rest of the story held strong and was extremely enjoyable.

I was expecting to not like this because the art style isn't my favorite but the story is so engrossing that I read it from cover to cover in one sitting. Going in, I didn't realize it was volume one of a series so now I'm DYING. Need volume two, stat. Witchy is a great magical story with great representation and no TERF authors.

This was interesting for sure. A world where magic is tied to the length of your hair. I thought it was a pretty good premise but I'll be honest, I was a little confused on the history of the magic - mainly why her father was killed and what exactly the burnings were. Had it been a little more fleshed out I might have enjoyed it more.

This was cute but I don’t find myself wanting to read more.

Not a romance
