This has some great world-building and that is what made me pick up the book in the first place - a world where the length of your hair determines the power of your magic. But if your hair is too long, then the Council has you executed.

I am very curious to find out what happens in the next book because there was a lot setup here and will definitely pay off in later stories.

This didn’t do anything for me, which is unfortunate, because I bought it when my library didn’t have it, even though I rarely buy books I haven’t read that aren’t a continuation of favorite series. There wasn’t anything particularly *wrong* with it, and it may just be that it was the beginning of a graphic novel series that I just didn’t see enough of to care about yet. I could see continuing it if/when more is published, but I wasn’t in any way excited by it.

i’m not usually much of a graphic novel person, but this was good, the pacing was good, the characters were good (io has my heart <3) and it was overall a good story

Witchy by Ariel Slamet Ries deserves more than the 3.84-star rating it currently has. This book has it all, bright and colorful illustrations, not too text-heavy, and a story that really sucks you into this world. I left this book wanting more, and I am so excited to know that this author is continuing this story. Witchy was definitely a fun read for me, even though at times the content could get a little dark, the author succeeded with inserting humor at the right moments. I loved how Ariel Slamet Ries didn’t shy anyway from certain topics and was able to flawlessly capture the reader’s interest. The fact that we have a full POC cast and Queer/LGBT characters is refreshing, the fact that it was done correctly and not created as an afterthought. You can tell that everything written has a purpose, and I love it.

The story revolves around the main character Nyneve who lives in the kingdom Hyalin where a witch’s power is determined by the length of their hair. The longer the hair, the more powerful the witch. Witches who are deemed strong are enlisted into the Witch Guard, the enforcers of the law and protectors during wartime. However, any witch who is deemed too powerful is seen as enemies of the kingdom and is destroyed.

Nyneve sees this first hand when at a young age her father is destroyed by the Witch Guard, his long hair deemed him too powerful. With this in mind, Nyneve tries everything to hide her own powers while also trying to fit in.

I really like Nyneve as a character, she starts off as this awkward girl just trying to fit in and then we watch her grow as a person who stands up for what she believes. I really enjoyed seeing her adapt to her surroundings and evolve as a character. Her witty comebacks also made this character endearing and relatable, using sarcasm to cope with challenging times. The character building was really well done, not just with the main character. I found myself wanting to know more about each character, I’m hoping they make another appearance in the next installment.

I couldn’t put this book down, I had to find out how this ended. However, it was clear that this is an ongoing story with much more to come. Ariel Slamet Ries releases new content to continue the Witchy story on her tumbler. If you want to keep up to date with this story check it out at https://arielries.tumblr.com/ and follow Ariel Slamet Ries on Twitter. I am so glad that I found this book, it has definitely made its way onto my “favorite books” list. I was excited to write this book review and honestly, I cannot say enough good things about this book. I give this book a solid 4 stars out of 5.

A witch's powers are tied to their hair length. But what happens if your powers don't match your length? And what happens when you distrust the guard? But get conscripted into it anyway? You do something no one has ever done before. And find something completely unexpected. Oh. And there's talking birds!
