i enjoyed the world and magic but there wasn't much explanation of it and i wanted more because as of now i don't have a clear idea of it. the plot dragged a bit and i wish more happened but i also enjoyed the art style

I caught up on the webcomic ages ago right before the hiatus but never reread the comic so I got the book to experience it again and it's just as good the second time around! The world is fantastical and interesting, the characters are charming and well-rounded (Nyneve is such a wonderful protagonist of this story, I love her) and the art just keeps getting better!

Nyneve lives in the kingdom of Hyalin, where a witch's strength is determined by the length of their hair and where most young witches have goals of serving for the Kingdom's military force, the Witch Guard. Nyneve knows well that long hair is a symbol of power but also a huge risk - her own father was burned by the Kingdom's leaders because they felt his hair length made him a threat to the Kingdom.

Years later, Nyneve does her best to hide her flowing mane and fit in. Shockingly, she's not super impressive with her magic skills. She is now old enough to be conscripted and struggles with her feelings about joining a government that killed her father. When Nyneve makes a drastic, dangerous decision, she must flee for her life. Along the way, she meets eccentric characters who begin to teach her more about who she is and the world she lives in.

I really loved the diversity in the book and the Nyneve's best friends Batu and Prill and really hope to see more of them in the future. There's another character that gives me hardcore Amethyst from Steven Universe energy, but I don't want to spoil anything! Eynag, another side character, had a beautiful backstory (plus, whose heart isn't warmed by the idea of finding a giant library of banned books?!). There are themes about diversity from the perspective of race and gender but also from the perspective of ability.

I was not expecting to enjoy Witchy quite as much as I did, and since it is based on an ongoing webcomic, I feel there will likely be more volumes in the future.
