Three stars- liked it

Overall I had a good time reading this book and will definitely pick up the second one, it just isn’t a new favorite yet. But I really liked the art style and flew through reading it. It was a bit choppy in some places and I was confused by a few parts. I didn’t understand why Nyneve’s dad was taken by the witch burners when Viceroy’s hair seemed way longer than his?

But I really loved her relationship with her mom and hope she has a role to play in the second one.
I also liked learning about the background of the kingdom and look forward to reading more about the (hopefully) rebellion and seeing how Nyneve’s friends that are part of the guard play into it. I thought it was so badass when she cut off her hair and oooooooh I hope she learns how to use her powers without it ahhhh!! So besides some confusion about the backstory and the world as a whole, I liked it and am looking forward to #2.

Pages I loved (OwlCrate edition): 74, 106, 219, 221

Witchy sets up such a fun and unique world that is well suited to a graphic medium. The highlight for me is definitely the unique magic system (power indicated through hair? I love it) and world-building, though I see great potential for more character and plot development in future volumes. This first instalment is very much just introducing the world and the characters, but I am excited to see where it might lead. Even in this relatively short book, our main character, Nyneve, has good depth and I am eager to see what will happen to the side characters too! The art style isn't my favourite but the artist is good at creating atmosphere through colour and the pacing is good.

This graphic novel is set in a kingdom, where magical strength is determined by the length of one's hair, and those with hair too long are burned as enemies. Nyneve's father was killed when she was a child and now, she lives in fear of the same thing happening to her so she conceals the true length of her hair. All she wants to do is avoid conscription, but her secret is revealed and Nyneve must choose between becoming a soldier or leaving behind everything she knows.

Witchy is the start of an adventure filled with family secrets, whisperings of a rebellion, and the promise of unearthing forbidden knowledge about the witches' powers. Nyneve and her trio of friends including Batu and Prill are the heart of the story. All three are set on different paths as Bati and Prill train to become soldiers and Nyneve attempts to find her own path. I'm excited to see where this story goes even though this volume felt a little uneven in terms of pacing and development.

Overall 3.5 stars. Great art, diversity and commentary set in an interesting fantastical world.

Liked this a lot, but my overarching question about this whole magic system went unanswered. Does hair just not....grow normally in this world??

This was soo good

3/5 stars. The ending was a cliffhanger! Can’t wait for the next book.

I started reading this story as a webcomic and was then was very delighted to see it released in print! Nyneve has grown up in the witch kingdom of Hyalin, where the strength of a person's magic is linked to the length of their hair. Short-haired witched are teased and shunned, but witches whose hair is too long are deemed dangerous, potential enemies of the state. Nyneve's long-haired father was burned by the Witch Guard when she was young, and ever since then she's hidden her long hair. But she and her classmates have reached the age of mandatory conscription and when she is chosen as a future member of the Guard, her whole life is thrown into chaos. This volume is just the beginning of what is clearly going to be a big story-- indeed, there are over 400 pages posted to the webcomic site (https://www.witchycomic.com/) and I was happy to see volume 2 is slated for released in early 2022. I love the art and the coloring and I'm very curious to see where this story goes!

3.5!

5 Stars

God, I can't believe it took me so long to read this wonderful graphic novel. I loved everything about it, and can't wait for the sequel! Probably my favourite read of the month.

EDIT: Just realised chapters 5&6 are already available online...now the question is, do I wait for the physical copy, my preferred way of reading comics, or binge the rest of the story sometime next week? Decisions, decisions!
