This had a solid start but it went off the rails in the second half, adding a whole lot of confusing information. And then it just...ended. With no closure or anything. It seems like there’s a lead up to a sequel? Who knows! Pretty bummed this one didn’t finish as well as it started.

Nyvene is truly more brave than anything or anyone in the whole book. It made me so sad everytime she called herself a coward. In her crazy world she knew what was right and wrong when others didn't yet see it. Her back story is heartbreaking & makes her that much stronger, she did/fought for what she believed in heart was right. The viceroy was power hungry & wouldn't have stopped being interested in Nyvene anytime soon. It was clear he was going to push her to her limits regardless. Her mother, Veda, was also surprisingly very powerful being a witch with hair on "shorter" side. I'm still very intrigued by the Raven, banana, & what he promised Nyvene. I can't wait to read more! I'm obsessed with Nyvene & hope she stays safe!

I really liked the concept of a person’s magical ability being directly related to the length of their hair (since I’d be the most powerful witch in my circle), but other than that little detail, the magic system didn’t really grab me. I also didn’t understand the rebellion being formed. Yes, the kingdom would burn anyone who’s hair is too long because they were considered a threat, and yes, that’s terrible, but what else? There wasn’t enough world building for me to truly understand the stakes, and the main character wasn’t that compelling to me. I was much more interested in Prilla and the decisions building up for her.
On a totally personal preference note, I didn’t particularly care for the art style.
My favorite favorite character was the raven, Banana.

The synopsis for this book, and the title looked and sounded so awesome to me, promising. But it fell really really short for me. The illustrations and the character art were amazing but I feel like really that’s the only thing it really had going for it as a stand-alone Graphic novel. It could have greatly benefited from a sequel, or a series in general because I just didn’t understand most of the world building or why certain things worked how they did. Our main character, Nyneve, was admirable and I felt bad for what she went through but I wish her story was better explained, like most the characters. I enjoyed seeing transgender representation in the story, Prill in my opinion has a ton more story to offer than what was shown.
Overall it’s not a bad book I just wish there were a sequel, or that it was longer.
