when io took her mask off and everyone stopped breathing for a sec... yeah a bitch could relate

last review for the most part still holds up sort of but i will say something that bugged me this time was that i think we're supposed to see nyneve, prill and bantu (especially nyneve and bantu) as close friends but it seemed like they barely even knew each other because they hardly interacted and i really wish we had gotten more of them together before everything fell apart

The artwork for this is absolutely beautiful, it's perfect, but i did feel like there were a couple things (mainly the side characters and io's back story but also a few other things) that I think were a little underdeveloped and disconnected that I wish were a little more fleshed out. But those things could definitely improve the more I read and I thought the worldbuilding was solid so I really did love this.

I have a mental list of running webcomics and graphic novels that I think are essential reads for anyone and this is high up there. The art alone is transcendent and is wholly unique from anything else I've seen. One of my favorite things about modern comics is that a lot of the artists/storytellers are telling queer stories in a way that we have never seen before in media. I've always loved fantasy and magic so to be able to read about characters that I connect to on a multitude of levels (Witchy's commentary on womanhood, social alienation, mental illness, and giving yourself a dramatic haircut after a huge life decision come to mind) and also representing queer people as multi-dimensional people that exist for reasons outside of companies wanting to get their rainbow points continues to be an incredible experience. Nyneve is the nuanced and ambiguously moral protagonist of my dreams and while the supporting cast is excellent in their own right she is truly the star of this show and the reason I keep on coming back. I'm both invested in her journey and enjoy shamelessly projecting myself onto her. I cannot recommend this webcomic enough and I cannot wait to add/continue to add physical copies of this to my shelves. 5 stars.

Wow I didn't expect to love this as much as I did. Gorgeous.

First, I would like to point out that this is only vol.1 and it is an on-going webcomic series (https://www.witchycomic.com/comic/page-1).

CW/TW: Mild transphobia/misgendering

In a world where your magical potential is measured by the length of your hair, and you can be burned if you're considered too strong, and therefore, a threat to the kingdom of Hyalin, Nyneve is a young witch, trying to survive by hiding her truth. The problem is, the time for conscription - a test that determines if you'll join the Witch Guard, sort of like obligatory military service - has arrived, and some powerful eyes will be on her.

I find the concept and world-building fascinating, and therefore I'm sorry to say that the world-building is only at its beginnings, which I found both boring at times and incapacitating as a reader. It needed to be stronger, I felt wrong-footed all the time and like I had to go slow, because there is so little we know, and therefore not much we can take a guess at. To give you context, the day of conscription started at page 60, which in a graphic novel is not much space to expand on such a complex multicultural fantasy world as Hyalin.

I still look forward to more of this world. There are plenty of secrets, possible erased history and corruption from the people at the top of the food chain to explore. There is also hypocrisy, I'm looking at you, Jinheung.

I absolutely loved the colouring. There are some pages to die for. *kisses fingers*

3.5 stars. Dipping my toes into reading graphic novels. I enjoyed reading this and like the artwork. I am interested to see where the story progresses from here and plan to read the next book. I genuinely like the main characters in this book, the author did a good job on character development which I feel can be hard to do well in the first volume of a graphic novel series.
