Read this for an assignment, per my seventh grade student’s request, and I am so glad I did! This is one of those books where I’d say it’s “effortlessly diverse” which is to say that diversity (of all kinds) are not only incorporated seamlessly, but also integral to plot and character development without feeling forced. The color palette was gorgeous and I really enjoyed the art style. I think this is headed in a great direction.

LOVED this! This was a beautifully illustrated graphic novel which a super intriguing story! I absolutely love the world and it sucked me in right from the beginning. This is just volume 1, and I know that I can continue reading it online (it's a web-comic), but I hope that they continue to print other volumes so that I can have them in my collection. For now, I will immediately continue reading it online here: https://www.witchycomic.com/

I want more. Is there a second book?

•Solid 4 Stars.• I thought the story was unique, and I loved how magic relies on the length of one’s hair. However, there were some parts I was lost at. Some gaps were filled in via dialogue, but not all of them. In the edition I have, some backstories are explained in the back of the book, but I think they should have been at the front to make the story flow and be better understood. Other than that, I really enjoyed reading this. The art was absolutely stunning which definitely enhanced the overall reading experience for me.

Um, YES?

This was the perfect book to fall in my lap right now. I'm only sad that it's the beginning of a series and I can't have a second volume in my hands right now (I could continue with the webcomic, but oh how I love physical bind-ups).

This is a racially and bodily diverse, magical, trans-repping (side character), critique of unjust power structures. AND there's a talking raven. Such a strong start to a series. I can't wait for more.

What a BEAUTIFUL graphic.

In Hyalin, a person's magical strength is determined by the length of their hair. Too short and the person faces ridicule. Long hair witches get the honor of serving in the Witch Guard a prestigious opportunity. However, hair too long and the person is burned. Nyneve's father was one of these and now as the Witch Gaurd's test her school to see who will be drafted, she fears she'll meet the same fate.

The story line was captivating, the characters had depth, and honestly I want more (seriously I'm going to look up the websomic). But I ADORED the art. I loved the bright colors & character designs. Nyneve always looked adorable and Prill has "strong woman" just radiating from her. The overall feel of the style reminded me slightly of Avatar the Last Airbender. Just a good warm cartoon feel that I could dive in to & have an amazing journey.
