The story of a witch who has had to hide the extent of her magical powers in an oppressive militant witch kingdom, Witchy brings a personal story that also has big world stakes. Nyneve has been hiding the length of her hair, a sign of magical power, so that she might not be executed like her father; she also has fritzy powers which she can't entirely control. So, when the time comes for the test for witches to be inducted into their army, she runs away instead. In another land, she finds her friend's sister, who is part of a rebel group, and a talking crow who tells her she is destined to change things.
The art style of Witchy is pleasing aesthetically, with brilliant colors, and interesting character designs. There is also casual diversity in how the characters are all designed - myriad of skin colors and races, body shapes, etc, and there are also queer characters. I still have my doubts on the world-building, though because it seemed like the previous rulers were involved in the witch burning before they were dethroned by the current Viscount (who is a witch with LONG hair) who stopped the burnings, but he is also shady; Nyneve, however, didn't know about his shadiness so I didn't understand her hesitation to join them.
I am still, interested in where the story takes us, and how it tackles the issues brought up in this first volume.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Lion Forge, via Edelweiss.

I absolutely adored this graphic novel. The characters were all thoughtful and diverse, and the plot was exciting. One of the things that I especially liked was the lore of the Hyalin. It's got me extremely interested in seeing where the story goes from here. I think there's a lot still being hidden from the main character and the audience and I'm excited to see how those things will be revealed.
Sooo I'm probably gonna be yelling about this for the rest of my life, but it's fine. It's fiiiiiine.
In a world where your magic is determined by the length of your hair, Nyneve is desperately trying to hide her own, which, due to family history, she knows makes her entirely too powerful. Things get a bit out of hand when her diligent hair-do is forced out of its confines during the yearly conscription process and from there it gets a bit dark and a bit existential. Also, here's a crow named Banana. It's so much better than I'm making it sound, I promise.
The art is a story all on it's own (the author and artist is not afraid of colour and I love it) and while I love the story itself, I could just look at the illustrations and be satisfied. I gather they're not to everybody's taste, and that's fine, it's not a style I've seen a lot and it did take a moment to get used to it, but don't let it discourage you from reading this gift. It's worth it.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This story is so interesting and imaginative and I'm so glad it's finally being printed so I can better keep up with it. I cannot wait to see what Nyneve gets up to next!
LOVE LOVE LOVE. Excellent story and art. Very interesting world building. I immediately looked up the webcomic and read the remainder of the available pages. The side characters are wonderful (my personal favorite is the talking crow named Banana). Highly suggest you go check it out.
