These books just get better and better. This one was, by far, my favorite in the series.

There are things to like about this series. Gamache is too “immaculate”, humble, reverenced and omniscient for my tastes. I hope Reine Marie gets to solve a murder one of these days. An entire book from her point of view living with the “great man” (really?!) might be refreshing.

This book may have been my favorite in the series so far. I loved the location (it isn't set in Three Pines) and enjoyed the family drama for the most part. I also didn't miss the drama in the Surete'.

I can’t say why exactly I like this series, but obviously I do. I love that the mystery of Bean isn’t answered because why should it be? All other thoughts are spoilers so I’ll leave them out.

Yes, I am reading these in order and the summertime setting in "A Rule Against Murder" at a luxury lodge by a lake in the woods was a nice bit of vacation. Family dramas, a quick visit to Three Pines, a smaller team with just Beauvoir and Lacoste, more on Gamache's father, Reine-Marie's more prominent presence, and a man who counts his blessings every morning, added up nicely.

The Lesson of the Cows in a murder mystery: “You know what money buys you? Space. A bigger house, a bigger car, first class seats on a plane. But it doesn’t buy you comfort, security or happiness. Some of the richest people I know are miserable. Always worried about losing their house, their money, if they’ll have enough.”

This is the first inspector Gamache novel that is not set in Three Pines. The novel benefits from the change and the focus is on the strong characters and their ongoing development. Highly recommended.

Louise Penny writes an interesting combination of cozy and police procedural. Her main character , Inspector Gamache of the Surete du Quebec is a formidable adversary for a murderer to face. Penny writes well rounded characters. So much so that there were many times that I laughed out loud at a description or situation even in the midst of a murder investigation. The fact that I hail from the Eastern Townships in Quebec makes Penny's stories that much more intriguing as I get a glimpse of the places of my youth. This particular murder mystery took a bit to take off but once started the pages flew. There were many twists I the plot and the ending was logical. In addition to solving the murder we learned more about Gamache's childhood which enriched the story.
