Enjoyed the trip outside of three pines but appearances by familiar characters. This time I figured out part of the mystery.
I enjoy the development of the characters and the place. I want to go work at the lodge and learn French.

Of course it’s lovely to spend time with Inspector Gamache and his team, but this mystery was all over the place and much more interested in piquant observations about family life than the pacing of a problem to solve.
I continue to love Penny's even pace, beautiful language, and flawless character development. She gives Three Pines a break in this novel, moving the murder to a luxury hotel; the community link is provided by two Three Pines denizens related to the recently deceased hotelier. Gamache's conflicts with the system are coming to a head as he is torn from vacation to solve the murder, and readers are shown both his strength and some previously hidden weaknesses. The murderer is brought to justice, but Gamache, his team, and his family are left in emotional peril...
This book shines most when it spends a few moments in Three Pines, but the locked room nature of the mystery that takes place at a remote lodge was good. The two Three Pines residents that are there are not my favorite of the lot and the family members of the one are so horrible it just made me want to throw a punch at their faces. Come to think of it, I wanted to punch the Three Pines resident as well.
All that said, I love this series.

3.5. This is number 4 in the Inspector Gamache series. I liked it and found it comforting and not overly predictable. I sometimes find the lessons and poetry a little boring. I am on to the 5th! Will keep you posted.
