A Rule Against Murder

mysterious fast-paced

Gamache is staying at a lodge for his anniversary, Peter and Clara are there.  Peter's family is having a reunion.  Peters sister is murdered, Gamache and his team work to identify the suspect.  Overall, a good Gamache story, but Peter's family is so toxic that at times I didn't want to keep going with the story - Peter himself was so awful to Clara when around his family (never standing up for her) - but I wanted to know who the murderer was and I like Gamache, his wife, and team so I finished.  Overall a good read.

I like how thoughtful Gamache is, which translates pretty well to each story. It's not just about the mystery, it's about behavior and relationships and human flaws and foibles. This one took me awhile to sink into, partly because it was set away from Three Pines and there were fewer repeat characters. But once I got into the mystery, the story was enjoyable.
SpoilerThe murder itself was intriguing and I loved the sugar to move the statue. But the murderer -- whose father was cheated out of money and so he murdered the wife of the man who did it -- seemed pretty weak.
The additional reveal of Gamache's father was intriguing.

Deeper dive into Peter Morrow’s family history, helping us understand why he is who he is. No input on the overarching story of inspector Gamache’s conflict in the Sûreté du Quebec.

This was a reread for me.  I found this one a bit long in the middle, and I had to keep working to get through.  But the ending was wonderful and really tied everything together, not just the murder, but the themes of perception and attitude.  How we choose to look at something determines our happiness and peace. I appreciated that theme.

I always appreciated Louise Penny's character and setting development.   The Morrow family was just awful.  I love Armand and Reine-Marie and their friends.  Except Peter.

"Every day, each of us does our sums. The question is, what do we count?"

So far my favorite Louise Penny! Really interesting family dynamics - kind of like a Clue mystery book with everything happening at the Manoir. I enjoyed learning about Ganache's father and upbringing, and I thought the sibling relationships of the Morrow family was super interesting. Although, I still really dislike Peter Morrow.
