I really enjoyed this, both content and visuals-wise. Mostly three stars because it felt abridged. There were several chapters that felt rushed or more of a summary when I wanted more.
I had no idea this was a graphic novel when I ordered it from Bookshop. It was one of a handful of books I wanted to add to my library by Black authors, and the subject of women not just being involved in but LEADING slave revolts more than piqued my curiosity. Illustrator Hugo Martinez did a PROFOUND job visualizing Hall's struggle to find documentation of these women-led revolts, and Hall astounded me with her ability to deduce likely scenarios of how these revolts came to be. Highly recommend!!!

Beautifully written, telling a complex story in easy to read and follow format. The visuals are incredible and you could spend more time looking at the images than reading the text. Phenomenal and emotional
Lots of solid graphic novels coming out recently focused on historical events. Wake talks about women-led slave revolts. These stories are hidden in the records for a variety of reasons, but can be teased out with some difficult research. I liked the stories that were featured, but the graphic style was slightly too line heavy for me. Either way, a good way to learn about this little talked about aspect of history.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review, but the opinions are my own.

The novel spends as much time explaining her research process--and the challenges to that process--as it does reviewing the revolts themselves. It all makes sense in the context of the work, but was just not what I expected from the title.
I didn't like the art and it was really stopping me from enjoying it. There was SO much going on in every panel, so to fully get what was happening, I had to spend a lot of time looking at the art.
