Beautifully written and illustrated, although a bit hard to follow at times. Really really interesting history.

This book was well done. So well done it was sobering to read because it’s so understandably emotionally charged. The illustrations are very well done. I highly recommend this book to any reader who appreciates the meaningful attempt made to honor some of the known black women who very likely rebelled while being traded and sold.

This book  was not what I expected, but I truly appreciated all of it. The book not only discusses the impact and role of women in slave revolts, but it also incorporates the research process into the narrative. The art in this graphic novel was absolutely beautiful. It spoke to the horrors of slavery and the trauma surrounding the research in a way that was as real as it was heavy. Highly recommend for everyone to have on their shelves.

This wasn’t exactly what I was expecting when I started it, I thought it would be more about the revolts led by women than it was, but why it wasn’t that was just as fascinating to me. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that there is very little in the way of historical record about women-led slave revolts, so what Dr. Hall did find was quite impressive. I ended up really enjoying the meshing of her story of the research she did with the historical story. I also thought the art was a great addition to the story. It’s not a style I normally like, but it fit this story so well and added an extra layer to the work overall. I would definitely recommend it to history fans and graphic novel fans and fans of memoirs, too.

this book is definitely a wowza must read. i learned a lot about the slave trade itself that we have never been taught. my heart aches for the slaves and women of the past and how they were treated. this is hard to get through but is so necessary
