Hmm, what to say about this book?! Firstly, it was nothing like I expected and honestly, at first I was enjoying it more than I initially thought I would. However, as the book went on, there were a few things that didn’t make sense or I just simply didn’t enjoy. For example, why was luke (carter) so completely bad at his job, and so careless about his feelings for sloan when he knew they would both be in danger? Also, how did both Sloan and Asa realise that luke was undercover? I hated the pregnancy trope at the end, why on earth would the girl who has been basically kept as a prisoner by this man, happily raise his baby? Also, I cannot stand Asa, he makes my blood boil. Overall, aspects of the book were decent but the rest I did not like, 2.5 stars.
This book isn’t suitable for young readers, nor are most of her books. Compared to other books, this book isn’t as super romance based (which is often the aspects I can’t handle or like) - I enjoyed the suspense of the book. The book does centre around a love triangle but I appreciated the portrayal of what domestic/relational abuse looks like in terms of how difficult it often is to leave (typically, increases likelihood of their death). Parts of the book weren’t necessary (I.e., in-depth explanation of romance) but they are easy to skip past as it doesn’t take up large portions of the book.
Also, I didn’t love how the author used mental health to make the readers dislike a character more. I was sad for the character of the realization of the diagnosis; however, seemed like they dismissed it in the end? Kind of confusing but also sad.
If you choose to read this, I would caution you about the content!

For what it is meant to be it’s an amazing books. It was a writing exercise for Hoover to clear her brain to be able to work on her other books. The whole point was to make it as demented and crazy as possible and was never supposed to be published. Which is why it comes off as a Murphys Law story off of Wattpad. But the drama and romance was amazing, my only ding is that the time frame of the book made zero sense in the beginning. It also could’ve been split into two books: one where they are in Asa’s house and one during the trial and everything. But it was great for what it was meant to be.

Fucked up so but so good! I was gripped the whole way through, even the grim parts..
Such a good book!! it kept me hooked the whole time! the only thing i didn’t like was the sudden ending. I would’ve liked more depth in the end.
⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
This was a much different than what I expected. Apparently this was Colleen’s “escape book”. Whenever she would tire of writing whatever she was working on, this is what she would work on. I believe this was originally written on Wattpad and it read like it. Not a bad thing! Just sayin’ lol
I’m happy with the way it ended, poor Sloan. She went through it, I can’t imagine. And like Sloan, I ended up feeling really bad for Asa. He unfortunately carried his childhood trauma into adulthood and felt as though Sloan had to “repay” him for his terrible upbringing.
Usually when I’m reading about a guy who’s obsessed with his girlfriend I’m like
