3.53 AVERAGE

i never said my reading taste was good

Pretty confusing.... Still don't know what's going on...

A slow start and rather clumsy in places, but still an enjoyable read which is left open for book 2.

... This book is something alright. I read The Fallen Star before this book, so I was very, very surprised by the content. I think the MC's habit of seeming desperate can grate your nerves. Sometimes I shouted, "Gah, get some backbone!" because I couldn't hold back half the time. There were so many instances where she let Love Interest #1 jerk her around (sometimes literally!). There seemed to be a lot of rushed plot themes/ideas that didn't get their turn at being fully-fleshed out.

Loved everything about this story! On to book #2!!

It was rough. I like the concept of this rewrite. Make it adult, change it here and there but I think this version made Alex more of a bitch than just the asshole he always was. It made Gemma more naive and extremely horny. Like could not get her mind off of sex even in death situations

This book is like a dumpster truck on fire. And just like you can’t tear your eyes away from that disaster, I couldn’t stop reading this book. It’s captivating enough, I’ll give it that, but it’s not without problems.

Gemma has spent her entire life without feeling a thing, which also made her isolated. Suddenly one day, she just starts crying and from that day she can feel. It turns out that she has the energy of a fallen star inside her, her emotions could compromise the star and then everybody would die. Then she meets Alex and gets dragged in to a world with all sorts or dangers.

The first problem I felt was there’s too many supernatural beings in the world that gets introduced. There’s vampires, werewolves, black angels, foreseer, magic, fairies and other immortal creatures. It’s like a dish that’s keep getting ingredients stuffed into it. Instead of being really spicy, it just ends up tasting really bland. The lore behind the creatures doesn’t get explored at all. I think it would have been better to limit the supernatural beings and dive deeper into the elements around them.

I’m also so freaking tired of asshole male characters. Alex pulls some hot and cold behavior throughout the book. Because he’s supposed to stay away but just “can’t”. And he treats Gemma like it’s her fault. He’s also controlling and uses physical force to keep her in place when she wants to get away from him. I feel like this has been said before, but here we go again: THIS IS NOT ROMANTIC, IT’S TOXIC. STOP ROMANTICIZE IT!!

Alex reminds me of Edward from Twilight. And I could really feel Twilight coursing through this books veins. And I get that this book came out around the time of Twilights glory and every author felt a need to add a love triangle. But I really don’t like them, how could you allegedly feel so strongly about a guy and at the same time jump between him and other guy like a ping pong ball? Just write one good male character and let him be the love interest.

One more thing I felt was problematic was the “steamy scenes”. As I understand it, this book is a re-imagining of an YA book, now as a New Adult book. But it doesn’t feel like it takes that step away from YA. For me, it’s not enough that you place the character in collage and shove in some sex scenes. The characters need to act their age. This entire book still screamed YA, in the characters behavior and the writing style. That made the sex feel misplaced, because the build up wasn’t really there. And Gemma has spent her entire life being deprived of human touch, it doesn’t feel natural that she would be comfortable having sex with a guy after only a handful of weeks. Sure, it could be that she’s desperate for it after so long. But it doesn’t get portrayed like that, it’s more like she’s just horny.

So 2.5 stars. Because just like a dumpster truck on fire; it’s not good, but enchanting to look at.

Review for Books 1 and 2 combined.

3 Stars. I liked this take on the paranormal. It's a little different than norm, but is pretty good as a whole. There are a lot of holes though. Things that just don't quite fit/add-up, but if you can get passed that and not think about it too much, it's fine. I like Alex okay. He grew on me as the story progressed. In a way, it was nice not having the cliche perfect male lead. Gemma could be annoying at times, but in general I rooted for her.

This book has a lot of mixed reviews. It seems reviewers either loved it or hated. For me, it's just right in the middle. I wouldn't ever over-analyze it or re-read it, but I do look forward to the third.

I bought this book as it was a freebie on Amazon and it sounded very interesting. I was really excited about reading this book especially after loving another book by the same author but Shattered Promises left me feeling a little let down.

Shattered Promises has had a few different covers and I think that this is one of my favourite versions as I love the colour and the use of stars in the background which is in keeping with the story.

This book is one of the most confusing books that I have ever read as there was so much going on and the closer I felt to a conclusion the more questions was thrown at us. I really couldn't get into it and there was times when I was close to not finishing it but there was a couple of times when I would start to like it which was why I never put it down. There was a lot of paranormal creatures in this book, you name it and they where either in it or mentioned but it did feel different to a lot of paranormal books that I have read which I enjoyed. The romance side of the story was completely unbelievable as I didn't feel like there was any chemistry between Alex and Gemma or even Laylen. I felt the ending did improve the book as it got interesting and now I do want to find out what happens next it's just I don't want to actually read the books.

I never warmed to most of the characters as they where either annoying or untrustworthy. Gemma had only just got her emotions back and she seemed to be feeling them all at the same time which did make me feel sorry for her, however there was a lot of times when I just couldn't believe the things that she was doing. For one of the first times I really didn't warm to the main male character Alex as when we first actually met him he was a jerk and when he was being kind I felt like there was a reason behind his kindness. Laylen was one of the few characters that I actually liked as he seemed more trustworthy than any of the others and he didn't seem to have an ulterior motive.

Overall I was very disappointed with this book but there was times when it was ok.

OMG! Can't wait for the next one!!! Counting down the days 'til June :P
