I did enjoy this as a second book! I thought the plot was compelling and was a great addition to the series. The biggest reason for docking stars was pacing. At times it felt so incredibly slow and dragging and made me feel like “what is the point of x, y, z?” And while z would have a purpose, x and y did not and felt like a weird forced addition. Maybe those elements will play a part later in the series, so my review and rating may change. I very much enjoyed the ending and I’m so so SO curious where this story will continue to go.
Original review from 2018:
This book was a tad slower than the first (the only reason it's not making the jump to 5 stars), taking its time to build up to a frenzy. And the last 100 pages were indeed a frenzy: violent, clever, and above all unique combat (an all-out brawl described in gritty, delicious detail); a blossoming of main character Paige Mahoney's power and potential (without making her seem invincible); and just enough of a disruption of balance to leave a reader itching for the next book.
While I thoroughly enjoyed The Bone Season, it left me dubious. The plot was not entirely original (though a lot of the particulars were brilliant and strange and oh so very interesting), the characters fit the mold of many similar books that came before, etc etc. But The Mime Order burst free of that narrow approximation, embracing its strangeness and its impossible draw.
I am well and truely hooked.
