This was a good book with interesting plot points and a satisfying ending. Somehow, I feel like the last few lines were a little too perfect in a predictable way, so I kind of wish there’d been a better resolution. Some aspects of the plot were very predictable but there were many very interesting plot points and it was an enjoyable read overall. I’m a little confused why she shared that tea-mind connection with Ruyi at the end because I don’t know if they’re friendship was really that well developed other than Ruyi standing for Ning’s ideas in front of Zhen on occasion and when she saved her when she was injured which Ning would’ve honestly probably done for anyone.
“We all believe we are the center of the universe, but we forget we are merely specks among the stars. Moving through the streams of possible futures, sometimes colliding.”
5/5 stars
Don’t ask me why it took me literal months to read this, I don’t have an answer. I loved this duology. It had everything, from adventure to gods to politics to magic to romance, literally everything you want in a fantasy! (though I will forever wish the romance was a bit stronger). I cannot wait to see what this author writes next. Her world building is pure magic. Ning and her sister Shu, along with the princess and Ruyi, truly showed me that strength can come in so many ways. Ning was bold and graceful within her strength, though she had her insecurities. Shu was quiet, but confident in her strength. The princess, Zhen, was unapologetic and sure in her strength. And Ruyi was giving with her strength. Such fantastic, strong women, proving that any woman, no matter who they may be, possesses magic within them.

This was a wild ride, ngl, the switch up from a tea ceremony to literal rebellion was crazy but not unpleasant! I loved seeing each character's growth throughout the book, and revenge was sweet, at least for me.
