The first installment focused on the magic system and on the competition, both aspects I really enjoyed. This second novel is more of a predictable quest story (that happens too quickly for my liking) with a really uninteresting antagonist. I feel like this duology would have been better as one longer novel because I could have done without the reminders of what happened in the first book, and without them this novel would have been a lot shorter. That Ning's perspective was told in first person yet Kang's was told in third also kept throwing me off. But the biggest pitfall was there wasn't enough backstory to the antagonist in the first book which resulted in me not being invested in their pursuits in this second installment.

There was a lot that I liked about this book, but sort of felt as if the whole story could have been deeper. I can imagine the way that it could be done as a screenplay, and I think, starting earlier in the story and building the characters would have been more effective. it feels as if all the action is here and the outline of a story, but not a lot of digging deep into character development and I didn’t feel very attached to anyone. but the story is fun and interesting. It just doesn’t feel polished or finished to me.

I’m glad this wrapped up the story but where the first book was exciting and fast paced, this one had uneven pacing and seemed to jump around then sit still. I appreciated seeing the different POVs especially when a major theme was trust.

This one is a long journey, but it kept me turning the page. The books just pull you into the scenery with such description and rich history.
