I enjoyed the first book of the Book of Tea duology that I knew I had to read the second right away. So here we are... And I loved it!!! Highly recommend if you're wanting a fantasy book sprinkled with some adventure, twisty turns, and romance. 😁

The Twists that happened got me shocked, was a good one , glad i finished it

Judy Lins writing is so magical!! I felt like book 1 and 2 flip flopped so much in terms of magic/fantasy and romance. I was sad to see such little romance in book 2 but Ning being so brilliant was chefs kiss ♄

I don't know why, but this one was a bit harder to get into than the first one for me. It's not something I can put my finger on, so I'll focus on the things that I did enjoy.

* The dual POV between Ning and Kang, I liked getting to see the story from his side, and it helped the plot keep moving at a good pace.

*The magic system was still unique and thrilling, and we got to see Ning gain confidence in herself and her abilities.

*Ning and her sister meeting up and getting to make this journey together.

The ending was everything I could have hoped for, and this is a great book to follow the first. I don't know why it didn't grab me in quite the same way, but when I think back on it, there's not one bad thing/experience I could point to. Just my brain, I guess!

This book was so empty. It was devoid of any feeling or emotion. Everything was written so passively that there was no way to connect with the characters. The author just said what happened instead of showing us even with how characters were feeling she just stated how they felt. The magic system was not fleshed out. There was no explanation why a girl from nowhere with no training was actually the strongest magic user in the world. The plot of the book was not revealed until 200+ pages into a 330 page book. The romance subplot that was developed in the last book was thrown away in this book. She switched from first person to third person between different character POV chapters. I am struggling to decide if I should put this on the shelf of shame but I don’t want to split up the series. You get one star back because the concept was cool, it was just so poorly executed.

This was still good/enjoyable, but not as good as book one. I normally like dual POV, but Kang’s POV was odd for me in that he’d unironically refer to himself in third person while thinking. I missed all of the beauty of the tea magic, and found the magic of the gods in this book confusing (there doesn’t seem to be or I don’t understand the rules of the relics like the crane’s feather being fire magic and how/why Shu can wield it; or the eye/Night-Illuminating Pearl and Lady An). I didn’t feel as connected to the side characters in this story either (I really enjoyed the kitchen staff in book 1). Things I enjoyed: Ning and Kang figuring out how to trust each other; Ning trusting Shu and bringing her in (their relationship as sisters growing up with them); the Hermit story & willow tree (I feel like Lady An’s section could’ve been its own entire story); Ruyi’s full faith in Ning as they go to the ā€œfinal battleā€.
