This duology was really interesting. I’ll admit to finding it a but slow to get into. Not bad at all, but it reminded me of Spin the Dawn which I enjoyed more. However the last 1/3 of the first book really drew me in and I ended up loving this journey.
Ning is a wonderful MC. She’s so brave, constantly, throughout this book. She’s a proper hero archetype, taking whatever’s thrown at her, always protecting others, taking on the destiny the gods give her without missing a beat. But none of that means she isn’t scared, doesn’t wish for an easier life, isn’t grieving and struggling as well.
I loved the side characters in this one, especially Lian, Zhen and Ruyi. Ning’s friendship with Lian felt like the beating heart of this series for me, and the romance between Zhen and Ruyi made me want a book that tells their story! Of course I was taken by the sapphic side romance 😂
The politics were intriguing and the history of the Gods was fascinating. I will admit to finding the magic and the way it worked a bit confusing, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

Something happened between book 1 and 2 because this was so good
Not as enjoyable for me as the first book, and I dreaded reading Kang's POV. This book felt less structured without the competition setting from book 1, and less light-hearted moments.
