I enjoyed this book it concluded the duology well. We get to see Ning grow and learn more of her power. I also really enjoyed the dual points of view giving us more insight into Kang. I feel that Kang got more of his hero’s journey in this book while Ning had her journey more in the first book and just needed a little more refining in this one.

The first book was amazing with so much political intrigue. This one just felt like a quota to fit the trope-ism on booktok. All the political intrigue was gone in favour for this enemies to lovers thing that I did not care for. So many elements came in that made no sense to the first book like the serpent. I also didn’t understand how the main character couldn’t use magic anymore after it was a learnt thing, not given. It felt very generic after such a good start.
