I liked this and am excited to see the movie adaptation coming out this year, but I have some qualms with it that felt very niggly.
Despite the author being a Galway native the setting of Ireland and Connemara felt very generic and arbitrary. The dialogue in particular felt very American, especially the use of the word “burglarize” at one point which often disrupted my immersion. I can only assume the author wanted to ensure a broader appeal by not leaning into the Irish slang. Google tells me that Connemara is the largest Gaeltacht region in Ireland so it felt odd that the characters spoke in what felt like an American way

Sooooo slow. And the ending dragged on while feeling like it switched genres. I’ve seen other people say it felt like the author wrote a short story in a creative writing class and tried to flesh it out without *adding* anything substantive.

I wanted to read this book because I saw that a movie adaptation came out recently. I saw the trailer for the movie and then found out it was based on a book, so I decided to read it.

I liked how mysterious everything in the story seemed to be, and I actually didn’t have an idea of how it was going to end. The book was pretty slow at some points which made it a bit difficult to get through, but it picked up towards the middle. I’ve been a lot of books with people being stuck somewhere recently, but this one was distinct enough to separate itself from the others.

I enjoyed it and thought that it was an interesting story. I’m also really curious about the movie adaptation and I want to watch it to see what similarities and differences it has. I feel like this premise would work pretty well as a movie. I recommend reading this book if you haven’t already!
