Youngmi has such a distinct voice. I didn’t listen to the audiobook but it’s like I could almost hear her in my head.

Some parts got a little long-winded so I kinda glazed over the big chunks of the less personal stuff. The story about her uncle at the Jesa really stuck with me. I loved the moment when she recalled her ex saying that he’s proud of them on her podcast. Her pregnancy story was so beautiful.

Youngmi digs into intergenerational trauma from a different lens and explores how humans cope from the forever cycle of shit from our parents and ancestors.  Humans are complicated and imperfect but it doesn’t mean you necessarily always hate them more or love them less. We’re all a little fucked up! It’s how you choose to move forward. Laugh until you cry and then laugh again.

I loved this. The author was so amazingly descriptive that it served to absolutely break my heart, while also making me want to hear more about her story. I felt like I was there with her, even though we share very few of the same lived experiences. I will read anything she writes.

The audiobook broke me. You can hear all the emotion behind Mayer's words raw and cutting. I learned a lot about Korean culture and customs all wrapped up in the abuse and trauma that is present in so many Korean lives. This book is also incredibly funny and my tears came both from laughing and crying. I cannot wait to hear more from the author.

This is a fantastic memoir. It will take you on a ride. I was laughing out loud throughout the book and there were times where I'd laugh and then get teary-eyed immediately after or vice versa. There are some dark themes and stories in this book so be warned. If you like unique memoirs that will make you think (and laugh), pick this one up!

Racism and misogyny intersect in such heartbreaking and infuriating ways throughout history and Youngmi shows us how by taking us through the Korean-American experience. Her poignant and biting observations gleaned from amidst the stories of her life made me laugh and highlight copiously.

Her way of acknowledging that people are themselves traumatized while also holding them accountable for the abuse they perpetrate on others is masterful. She takes a scathing knife to lay bare the rotten bones under the ease of life that men, especially white men, enjoy everywhere.

To sum up, people are messy and selfish and dramatic and egotistical and complicated. These thoughts on family, heritage, biracial struggles, racism, society, success, and more are definitely worth reading.
