These were interesting stories. I liked the themes and ideas and all around enjoyed reading them (I wish Lucas's and Karina's would have been a full size novel, I admit)... but I failed to really get into any of them. None of them made me *feel*... but they were a fun time distraction.

Angel's Wolf: 4 stars
Alphas: Origins: 5 stars (come on, it's by Ilona Andrews)
Nocturne: 4.5 stars
Ascension: 3 stars (so boring, I can barely remember what it's about as I'm writing this)

Ilona Andrews' site says that this short is their "most controversial" and YEP I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY. Yeesh.

This is a anthology that has a story by Nalini Singh that takes place in her Guild Hunter universe. It's called Angel's Wolf. The characters aren't any of the mains from the series but it's still one of the best shorts I've ever read. I find that the only shorts I'll read are ones that relate to series I'm already reading. It's the only way I can read one without feeling like I'm being short changed on story. This really was a heartbreakingly good story and I generally hate anything that makes me cry.

I read this book solely for Andrews story Alphas: Origins. I enjoyed this one, Henry a side character was great! Lucas the main "hero" (he's more of an anti hero). I see him as the more aggressive 'grrr' alpha male that's prevalent today. But he's an alpha male with a conscience. At least in my opinion. I am kind of on the fence about him. But it is hard to fully draw out a character like Lucas in only 100 pages. I think I would have had a better opinion of him if this was a novel. But I did enjoy this bit and if the Andrews team were to say write more, I would have no qualms about reading more.

I enjoyed the Ilona Andrews piece, though I really would have liked to have read the book as the authors wanted it to be instead of edited down as much as it apparently had to be for this anthology. I continue to not really have any interest in the Guardians series. I've read two short stories (novellas? idk how they were classified) from that universe and it's just not for me. The Nalini Singh offering I also found a bit predictable and vanilla. I believe this was the first thing I've read by Sharon Shinn. I enjoyed the story, but maybe not enough to seek out her other stuff (mostly because something about the ending seemed a little too pat).

If you are someone who feels they must read all of a book like this, idk if I'd recommend it. Of course, it's not always my favorite medium. I did feel that these stories went well together and kept the theme relatively consistent. I'm not sure if that was to the detriment of the individual stories, though. I know romance tropes are there because people enjoy seeing the journey along the way, but I thought many of these stories just didn't have all that interesting of a journey to discover.

Angel's Wolf by Nalini Singh
5 stars
I have read the Guild Hunter series so know the world well. I liked the story and the characters but the relationship was a little stilted by power issues. Still the story was pretty well fleshed out for a novella. Even the characters and their problems were well drawn. It was a great addition to the series.

Alpha: Origins by Ilona Andrews
4 1/2 stars
This was a new world for me also. At first I thought it might be part of the Edge series but very quickly discovered it was something else. It was definitely something else, something between a science fiction and fantasy story but you don't get to that until well into the story. Until the explanation, you just think of grotesque shape shifters and indentured servitude. It was definitely grittier than the other novellas

Nocture by Sharon Shinn
4 1/2 stars
This one starts really slowly. She is a cook at a school and he is a blinded angel who lives secretly in the mansion apart from the school. I really like the play between the two characters when it finally starts. The big problem is you never get to understand the world, who are the angels and how do they interact with the world. It sounds like they have a short life span compared to other angel novels but you never even learn that. Even not having an idea of the world and how the species interact, I still liked the relationship between the two characters probably the best of all the novellas.

Ascension by Meljean Brooks
4 1/2 stars
I liked the chemistry between the two characters. Not knowing the world, I was a little lost but seemed to catch up. I think I would like to try this series out after reading it. The story was great for a short and well explained. The relationship is well fleshed out and since they were coming from a past relationship, pretty believable.

As an anthology of novellas goes, this is one of the best with all the stories being good. Ascension, Angel's Wolf, and Nocturne, being more romance and Alpha: Origins being more a UF something else.

I only read the short by [a:Ilona Andrews|21748|Ilona Andrews|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1219436898p2/21748.jpg]. It is a stand alone story. This is set in a completely new world that is great. I really like Lucas and Henry.
