Ogni tanto mi piace immergermi in queste letture...storie che mi catapultano in una vita passata mi portano in un luogo dove non ci sono macchine, ma ci si sposta con calessi e carrozze, le donne sono vestite con grandi abiti con corsetti stretti che mettono in evidenza bellissimi décolleté, gli uomini sono pronti ad eventuali duelli per difendere l'onore della loro famiglia o delle loro amate, si fanno grandi balli e si conversa davanti a un grande camino con un bicchiere di cherry in mano!
In questo racconto troviamo Sophy, Sophy la Grande, una ragazza diversa dalle altre sue coetanee, ama l'avventura, è intraprendente, testarda e audace, suo padre deve recarsi in Sud America e per un po' di tempo viene accolta in casa della zia Lizzie dove porterà grande scompiglio e subbuglio. Sophy ama combinare il corso delle vite amorose delle persone che la circondano, con astuzia, stratagemmi e furbizia riesce a ottonere i suoi scopi!
La Heyer è una magnifica scrittrice che caratterizza molto bene i personaggi, descrive perfettamente gli ambienti e alcuni passaggi del racconto sono molto divertenti, è bello poter immergersi nell'Inghilterra vittoriana quando la scrittura è così piacevole e gradevole.
"Questo-affermò severamente Sophy-è quanto dice chi è troppo pigro o troppo timoroso per cercare di aiutare gli altri. Io ho molti difetti, ma non sono pigra e non sono timorosa, anche se questa non è una virtù, perché, come dice mio padre, sono nata priva di nervi e sensibilità. Non ne sono certa, poiché ancora non so bene che cosa farò, ma potrò aver bisogno del vostro aiuto Charles per far rompere questa sciocca promessa di matrimonio. "

Why did I wait so long to read this book? I've heard of Georgette Heyer for years, but usually put her in he category of romance, which I didn't used to read much. This book is about matchmaking, but I wouldn't call it a romance in how we use the term now. It's a vivid description of upper class lives in Regency England, with much about who marries who. All the characters are well-fleshed out and I loved Sophy and her style of pushing the limits of polite society. I think this is going to be new favorite for me that I re-read in the future.

I love this and it's hilarious but Sophy is pretty much a psychopath (I am thinking of that last scene where she shoots Charles in order to fix his love life). Watch out for some blatant antisemitism. It pretty much comes with the author and is typical for the 30s and 40s but it's still unpleasant.
While a bit purple and overwrought, I did enjoy this one... although I'm pretty sure Sophy would have been shunned from proper society in about two seconds if this had happened in Regency England.

The wit! The banter! The comedy of errors! This is just FUN and utter perfection. An old favourite that I will adore forever
This was so enjoyable, our heroine is so intelligent, witty and likeable. The writing is wonderful and the plot is engaging. I could not ask more for a fictional regency read.

I enjoyed this for awhile but found Sophy to be increasingly obnoxious and manipulative in the second half.

This 5 stars has a big asterisk next to it. I love the main characters and their romance but there is both an overt slur and a character who embodies every anti-Semitic characteristic one could think of. It's a minor role but it is pretty darn offensive.
