It was alright. The stories had interesting twists.

Some parts were great, some I skipped completely, and some I was deeply dissatisfied with. An interesting concept though.

Not so much a review as assorted impressions.

My 2000th read book on goodreads, a fact I obviously missed at the time. (Remember when goodreads used to show prominently the number of books read overall? I do. Sigh.)

Having already read two collections of Donoghue's stories (Astray & Woman Who Gave Birth to Rabbits) I found it interesting to compare how the style and the themes have developed. I still find it difficult to reconcile this thoughtful, biting and witty Donoghue with the author of The Room (a book I consider to be well-written but ultimately exploitative and ill-conceived).

The slim volume was practically a one-sitting read (I read about half of it on my way to and from work). It was gripping and fun though admittedly lacked the artfulness of Carter's fairy tale retellings (though that's not necessarily such a bad thing).

This was a fast read but at times I felt I couldn't fully tell which fairy tales it was these were rewrites of.
