If you are white, put down your defenses and read this. Listen. Hear her. Hopefully it is uncomfortable. Best if it makes you think, and then act as an ally.

This book is truly breathtaking. While most of the literature I have read lately has been rooted in studies and facts, Austin really appeals to your emotions. This book hurt, made my heart soar, made me despondent. She is truly an incredible writer to evoke these feelings. She speaks of God and Christianity a lot, which I actually enjoyed, but I’m not sure other people would connect with it. Either way, it is her truth, and I appreciate reading it. Her letter to her son in particular made my heart ache. I know I say “required reading” a lot, but I really do wish people would read this. You won’t learn any statistics about Black life in America, but I think you will more fully understand what it feels like to be Black in America. This is a powerful book.

A beautiful book, a prophetic voice that should be required reading.

In this memoir the author shares her experience of being a black Christian woman in America. How in order to be respected she had to conform to a white world view and how she struggled with that challenge and her identity. A fast, educational, and moving read. Highly recommend!

This was a really interesting memoir, describing how the Black woman author moves in, through, and among white spaces, learning to love her Blackness. Her descriptions of white Christianity was particularly on-point for me, as I grew up in a predominantly white conservative church. I would recommend this to everyone who is interested in learning more about lived experiences in Black families and communities.
