2.5 rounded up. The story was interested but the writing wasn’t great. She’d frequently break from the narrative to point out what’s wrong in the world and it felt disjointed.

Some other reviewer said it was “oddly engaging but truly atrocious” and I could not agree more.

Whore of New York: Confessions of a Sinful Woman by Liara Roux. I really wanted to like this one, but it just didn’t hit the mark for me. The first section read a bit book-report-y and I found it disarming that she dove right into an extensively detailed description of her childhood before giving readers a reason to decide why they should care. I think the well-intentioned idea was to de-stigmatize the occupation of sex work by breaking down the stereotype that all sex workers are victims of human trafficking or come from poverty and unstable houses or are otherwise pressured into it against their will (which is a great message! BUT the delivery of it came across as oddly self-gratifying). The tone was light and conversational throughout and while I think Roux made several interesting points about the trade and how it can be an expression of feminism, it just never engaged me as a reader.

This felt really unorganized and rambled quite a lot, jumping from topic to topic. Felt like it lacked nuance when dealing with a lot of topics, and felt somewhat naive because of it. Wanted to like it more than I did, but I felt like it could have used a lot more editing.
