3.5/5
I was really into the book in the first half, then it started to lose me a little bit. The last two chapters were bad in my opinion because they tried to introduce a lot of character development seemingly out of nowhere. I mean I always love a strong protagonist and I really waited for the character development for so long but it was very abrupt.
Something about the last 4 chapters (and especially the last two) was very unsatisfying. I expected a lot of action but I received very little.
It wasn’t a terrible read because it started strong (with symbolism and themes) but it just didn’t live up to that. I’d recommend any of Dazai’s other works more!

"Are you irritated? Even if you are, please bear with me. Think this is the one offense of a deserted woman who is being forgotten, and please, I beg you, grant it."
OSAMU DAZAI THE MAN YOU ARE LEAVE ME ALONE I'M CRYING I HATE YOU. absolute masterpiece, would probably read it again. I think this made me fall completly in love with his art work. love him.

Dazais way of writing is probably one of the best examples of "hauntingly beautiful". I am no literary scholar, so I cannot quite pinpoint what makes his writings so extraordinary, but when you read "The Setting Sun" you cannot help but feel exactly what he wants you to feel. The characters are (so to say) full of life and their problems and sorrow feel all too real. Dazai paints a disturbing, yet beautiful picture of post-war Japan and transports you back into a world torn between hope and despair.
I love love love how Dazai writes and I especially enjoyed Donald Keene's translation. I perceived Kazuko as a very real, well-written female character, an exercise in writing through the eyes of a young woman who looks at his own alter ego (Naoji and Uehara). This is is a short novel but it conveys very well the feeling of decadence and misery of the post-war period, thanks to powerful imagery (I really liked the recurring image of the snake) and as I said very good writing. I loved this passage especially: "I wonder if there is anyone who is not depraved, Naoji wrote in his notebook. Those words made me feel depraved myself, and my uncle and even Mother somehow then seemed depraved. Perhaps by depravity he actually meant tenderness".
