Dazai eloquently writes about a post-war society and how people's everyday lives and struggles are influenced by it. The Setting Sun captures the struggles of grief and what guilt we might have surrounding it, the right to death, the importance of familial love, and what it means to love in general. Kazuko was dealt an unfair hand in life but she accepted that the way people dealt with their struggles around her was not how she wanted to approach the world.

"Last year nothing happened, the year before nothing happened, and the year before that nothing happened."

Hopelessness, abandonment, loss of status, grief. Captivating and beautifully written account of the reality of life.

this is written with such a deep feeling of shame and humiliation.
found it fascinating the juxtaposition between her and her brother naoji, the familiar relationships in general... he writes dysfunction well... strained yet...
i feel a lot of this was about alienation, much like no longer human, but in a different context. kazuko obvi reacting to it differently too.
its hopeless and pathetic but she keeps living, and finds reasons too, shes really the only one in her family that could adjust in a way.
very inner turmoil-y and honest.
i feel empty. as per the course with dazai.
