I adore Ransom Riggs' character writing - complete rockstar.  Leopold Berry's plot, however, felt wildly clunky.  My husband and I enjoyed this read together and appreciated the fast pace, but the climax fell quite flat, and the epilogue came out of nowhere?  We'll definitely be back for book 2 though!

At first glance this book seems like Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children in a different font but as I got further along it didn't stop diverging, becoming a wholly different and unique story. It had all the same charm and excitment of that series but surprised me at every turn. I'll be waiting, impatiently, for the next book!

DNF at around 30%. I was just feeling this book. I haven’t read any of Riggs books and I believe I tried his Miss Peregrine’s series but couldn’t get into it. I feel as though his books are when you are in that stage to read like paranormal/fantast stuff. Sadly I wasn’t but I will be giving this book another try because I do see potential. I just think it wasn’t the right time for me to start.

I don't understand this book to be completely honest with you. I read it, consumed words, and was lost the entire time I was reading it. This book had a plot, I couldn't tell you if it was good or bad because I didn't even understand how it tied together and everything. I think the confusion might be the point of the book, but I really couldn't tell you. All I know is this 12-year-old watches this old show and starts seeing aspects of the show in real life. Then later in life, the same kid is getting berated by his father and called an idiot constantly, which is the only thing I can relate to in this whole book. Also, his mom died right after he turned 12 so he has problems and needs therapy (he is in therapy, his therapist says he is trying to distract himself with visions to get out of his bad situation in life). I did not understand much else about this book to be completely honest.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - kids these days have no idea how lucky they are to have the YA books that are around today. I would have KILLED to have been able to read this book when I was in middle/high school.

Anyway - this was delightfully weird. It felt like Doctor Who and Neil Gaiman wrote a YA book. I got Neverwhere vibes from this but in a much more wholesome and teen friendly way. The world building was spectacular, the Leopold/Larry was so painfully relatable, and the story really stuck with me. This is my first Ransom Riggs book I've read and it is so so well done. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in a beautifully strange YA sci-fi novel. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
