I listened to the audiobook and didn’t like the narrator’s voice. The protagonist’s POV was tiresome. I thought I would’ve liked a second POV character to balance the protagonist’s religion-indoctrinated viewpoint, but I didn’t like being in the other character’s head either and I didn’t feel like we had much time to get comfortable with him.

Yeah theyre not lying about the body horror, it is intense. I did really like this book, I think I would’ve liked it more and cherished it closer if I read it while I was a teen, I’m glad the age group is getting such a wide span of books these days, because I can feel that many people will appreciate this and books like it.
Gruesome, perilous, hopeful, disheartening, and devastating all at once.
Overall I really adored this novel and found a kinship in many of the characters. However, I did find it hard to be in media res and felt as if I was playing catch up entire story to get on the same page with terminology that was used.
I also feel that Nick and Benji had an obligatory romance when they could’ve existed just fine as friends or even have a queer platonic relationship.

One of the best YA books I’ve read in a long time. Gritty and dark yet hopeful and kind. You can tell this book was written with care taken for all of the different subject matters it tackles. A queer kid experiencing religious trauma is definitely not an unfamiliar position to me and the fantastical and post-apocalyptic elements are really just used to the advantage of the present themes. I rarely find myself crying at books but there were parts of this that just rang so true that I couldn’t help but tear up. Also, the narrator who read for Benji POVs was great. Super excited to read more by this author!
