I am genuinely shocked at how much I hated this. It’s bad enough that it’s all so out of character for Poirot, that it’s some bizarre Edgar Wallace like spy thriller… but it’s also got obvious allusions to Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was a bit mean spirited? So utterly strange. And thoroughly unenjoyable.

Trying to read through the Agatha Christie books I’ve missed. This was a fairly weak one. Poirot confronts a worldwide conspiracy made up of 4 people. The book has a pretty high body count and each mystery is wrapped up in a pat manner. Never really bought into the story tho all of number 4’s various disguises were fun.

This one was rough.
It was extremely incoherent, apparently because it was split up in to multiple parts and put in different monthly issues of a magazine or something? Christie decided to publish it as a novel when she was having writers block.
Honestly, it feels like they were trying to shove Poriot into a James Bond story. Doesn’t work very well.

This is the wildest Poirot story yet. Felt bad for the rollercoaster of emotions Hastings went through but absolutely enjoyed this book.
