Great concept of hero and heroine archetypes, all the more moving in each character's individual circumstances. The novel's notable feature for rich allegory definitely never disappoints. So many insightful concepts brought me into deep philosophical reflections about life and morality. This might sound a little cheesy, but I felt I was spiritually enlightened through their journey. There are many religious implications that may conflict with one's personal beliefs; but I think the true key to enjoying this book is concentrating on the allegory, and how the meanings transcend beyond its time to resonate with human experiences. In short, John Bunyan was a master of his craft.

Absolute favorite book as a child. I remember once I set out to write a revised version--the exact same events but in modern English. So many good Biblical truths woven into this story, and while it may be a little heavy-handed with the allegory, I think that's the point. A true classic, and worthy of its position of second-best-seller of all time (after the Bible).

Really good translation. The pictures were amazing. The religion was at times overwhelming

I know it's vain of me to review my own book and perhaps shocking that I give it only two stars. But the fact is I failed in this book - and I would know. I intended or as satire, people, and none of you got it. I mean, all those ridiculous character names! How could you not see it? Because I'm a horrible writer that's why. Read Frank L. Baum's "Wizard of Oz" if you want a GOOD journey story.
What is worst is that this book is a "classic" and SO many people have read it. My far superior book, the first of the series, "The Pilgrim Starts Out", is lost to history while "The Pilgrim's Progress" remains in print. Believe me, it is no loss that the third book, "The Pilgrim Finally Arrives" is also forgotten. That book suuuuuuucked.
I suppose I should be thankful that so many have bought this book and liked it, even if for the wrong reason.

Edited by C.J. Lovik is the way to go! Written in the 1600's and is not as well-read today as in previous generations, but is still full of truth! I loved it... If it wasn't owned by the public library, I would have been highlighting it up!

I was excited to read this to prepare myself to watch the movie that came out a few years ago, it felt like I was reading the cartoon play out. The plot shared some twists on some of the challenges Christians face. Lost my interest towards end. Probably would have kept my interest if I was younger. Movie was better although demons were scary looking

This definitely isn't my favorite book, but I appreciate the way it was ahead of its time when it comes to literature.

Four stars for creating an allegory of this length; for the translation that was more readable than the original; and for some thought provoking moments. All in all, though, it was a bit of trudge through this book that basically repeated the same story twice and was a bit like reading an extended sermon. Again, the translation made it very readable; and it's one I needed to read for a while! #58/100 GAR
