Never in a million years would I have thought that I would ever pick this series up, read it, and actually really enjoy it! Frankly, I kinda hate the cover for it and was anticipated an all together different read based on just that fact alone.
"Pretty Little Liars" is totally a guilty pleasure book that reminds me a lot of the books I used to read when I was younger. There's a whole ton of drama, yet some of the other topics covered within this book are also quite mature and unexpected - eating disorders, homosexuality, teen drinking, etc.
The characters are flawed and definitely spoiled brats, yet there is a level of vulnerability within each of them that redeems them. It kinda makes you want to root for them. Granted, I did find myself wanting to smack them at times for their choices, but I think it played in very well to how insecure each of the girls really is inside.
Overall, I am absolutely glad I read this book. Its a light, fun read that leaves you wanting more. I am definitely planning on continuing on in the series.

2nd Read 2022: 4.5 Stars
Rereading this about a decade later is definitely an... interesting experience. I'm way past all of the hype of the TV series (in fact I stopped watching the show after season 3), and I can just focus on the book itself and what it has to offer, which turns out to be a lot.
I forgot how spicy and wild the story was (much more so than the first episode of the show, which is basically this entire book), the girls are so messy but in such a fun and addictive way. I was literally obsessed while reading this, and I didn't want to put it down.
I know that there's some "problematic" things, like student teacher relationships and age gaps, but that's the kind of thing that you read/watch content like this for. Don't get me wrong, if any of this stuff was happening IRL, definitely call the cops, but in fiction I just don't see the issue. It's the same as watching a horror movie to me.
The idea of the reading the next book has me SO excited. Specifically because I know that the books start to deviate from the show pretty quickly, but I don't really know in what ways. So the mystery of what's going on is still very much there for me, and I just can't wait!
Side note, I just want to thank How To Train Your Gavin for incentivizing me to finally continue this book series, I'm having a ball!
1st Read 2013 (review in 2019): 4 Stars
I read this because of how much I liked the series. And while there's some similarities, they both feel so different. I really enjoyed this, and thought that it did a decent job of introducing the characters and setting up such an entertaining mystery. Can't wait to read book two.

rewatching the series and thought it would be fun to read along w it but damn this was so boring
sooo different from the show but still so enjoyable and omg why is spencer a nicotine addict lmao
This is the first book in the series; I first heard about the books when I caught one of the episodes on tv, but didn’t give it another thought until recently, when I saw a commercial for the show. I’m definitely intrigued with the series, and I really want to know who A is, what really happened to her, and what the Jenna thing is all about.
Rating: I give it a 4 out of 5. I love the mystery and intrigue set up in the book, plus, it’s a really fast read.

Title should've been Shallow Little Bitches. Not to say the show adaptation is any better but it's at least enjoyable. I guess the director decided the "weird"* girl couldn't also be stupid, so they made Hanna stupid instead of Aria? Because the earnest question "can ghosts send DMs" is...something else.
Why is 80% of the book them not being friends anymore? This was just a list of designers. Apparently rewritten at some point, given they mention Tiktok and Justin Bieber's marriage, but the book was originally written in the 2000s. At least The Devil Wears Prada was a list of designer clothing for a reason; this was just boring.
* So weird is...knitting? I mean, there's Pigtunia (thank fuck they cut that from the show), but come on.
