I knew these books were gonna be cheesy and a little problematic because the show was, but this was so much worse than the show.
Four girls, Hanna, Spencer, Aria, and Emily, who used to be best friends start their junior year of high school a few years after the leader of their friend group, Allison, goes missing, and they begin to receive threatening text messages mysteriously signed "A". Hanna deals with her newfound beauty and popularity. Spencer fights with her sister and falls for her sister's boyfriend. Aria adjusts to being back home in Rosewood after a year living in Iceland with her family. Emily struggles to keep her secret that she is attracted to girls, namely her new friend Maya, who moved into Allison's old house.
I feel like nothing happened in this whole book. The entire book was made into the pilot of the show. It was so slow moving and boring, and the dialogue and internal monologues were so cheesy it hurt. I finished it using the audiobook, which made it a tad bit more tolerable because I didn't have time to dwell on the crappy writing. Overall, I was expecting this to be cheesy but nostalgic, and instead, it was just painfully dull and cheesy. Super quick listen on audiobook, though.

I've heard this is a popular series, but I think I've out grown this. In the vein of Sweet Valley High, it's a series of books with situations that are very far fetched to have been lived by girls this age. I will likely not continue the series.
